Welcome to the Honors College

Dean Charles Adams, Ph.D. Welcome to the Honors College of the University of South Florida! This is my first year as Dean of the College, having succeeded Dr. Stuart Silverman following his retirement after 44 years of service to USF and 12 years as Founding Dean of the Honors College. Through this transition, the mission of the Honors College remains the same: to develop tomorrow’s leaders by providing first-rate educational opportunities to the most highly motivated, intellectually curious, and academically accomplished students at USF. We strive to create a tight-knit intellectual community by:

  • offering an interdisciplinary honors curriculum featuring small classes taught by engaged and creative faculty
  • providing an honors residential experience
  • supporting student achievement with expert individual advising and a highly successful Office of National Scholarships
  • sponsoring co-curricular opportunities in community development, global studies, and leadership
  • encouraging each student to pursue a significant and rewarding research experience that takes advantage of USF’s resources as a Top-50 Research Institution

Year after year, Honors College graduates go on to great careers in both the public and private sectors, and win admission to top-flight medical schools, law schools, and other graduate programs. That success is built on an academic experience characterized by personal attention, extensive student-faculty interaction, challenging course materials, and a classroom atmosphere emphasizing thoughtful analysis and communication skills. New! Michael Calzadilla '15 is USF's First Gates Cambridge Scholar

Mr. Michael S. Calzadilla of the University of South Florida has been named a Gates Cambridge Scholar for 2015. He is the first USF recipient of this scholarship and one of 40 selected from the US. This global scholarship, funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, provides funding for graduate work at Cambridge University for intellectually outstanding students who have a capacity for leadership and a commitment to improving the lives of others. Applicants must be accepted into Cambridge University first, before being considered for the Gates Cambridge Scholarship. At Cambridge Michael will study for an MPhil in Astronomy with Drs. A. Fabian and V. Belokurov. He intends to earn a PhD in Astrophysics and become a professor of physics destined for a career of research, instruction, and outreach. He will specifically study the co-evolution of active galactic nuclei (AGN) and their host galaxies at various wavelengths.
