About Honors

The USF Honors College is located in Tampa FL, one of the fastest-growing metropolitan areas in the country, one that provides numerous intellectual, cultural, recreational, and social resources. The Honors College provides an exciting experience and a productive learning environment that combines the advantages of a small, highly personalized college with the resources of a large research institution. Outside the classroom, our vibrant Tampa Bay community offers an array of internship and volunteer opportunities.

The Honors College at the University of South Florida is for motivated students, regardless of major. The Honors College program emphasizes the development of thinking, reasoning, analytic and writing skills, which you can apply to an individual research project or original creative work. The Honors College curriculum replaces a significant portion of the University's Foundations of Knowledge requirements, so participating in Honors will not generally increase your workload.

Benefits of participating in the Honors College include:

  • Small classes that encourage interaction among students and USF's top faculty
  • Personal advising by faculty and staff who are committed to your success
  • On-campus opportunities to work with faculty who are doing cutting-edge research
  • The chance to broaden your horizons through international study or participating in honors conferences across the country.
  • Effective for all Honors College students with at least a 3.0 overall and USF GPA, registration on the first day each semester.

Honors College students receive an Honors distinction on transcripts and diplomas as well as special recognition at graduation. Your Honors experience will be an invaluable advantage as you pursue postgraduate work and face career choices and challenges. Graduate and professional schools and employers recognize students who have gone the extra mile.

Visitng the Honors College

Are you visiting USF and want to visit the Honors College? Call us to schedule an appointment! We can make an appointment for potential students and/or families with an academic advisor or the Assistant Dean during our office hours, Monday-Friday 8am-5pm. Let us know if you are interested in a specific program or major and we will try our best to get you connected to that particular advisor. It is a feeling that is testament to the dedication of the Honors College to its students, and that allows me to move forward confident that the support I have found here will continue with me ...[t]here was always someone at the Honors College who was ready to be the sounding board and confidant, the mentor and colleague, which every student needs. Most importantly, they were the supportive hand that said, 'I believe in you, you can do it!' when traditional voices of encouragement fell silent. Michael Calzadilla '15 is USF's First Gates Cambridge Scholar

Mr. Michael S. Calzadilla of the University of South Florida has been named a Gates Cambridge Scholar for 2015. He is the first USF recipient of this scholarship and one of 40 selected from the US. This global scholarship, funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, provides funding for graduate work at Cambridge University for intellectually outstanding students who have a capacity for leadership and a commitment to improving the lives of others. Applicants must be accepted into Cambridge University first, before being considered for the Gates Cambridge Scholarship. At Cambridge Michael will study for an MPhil in Astronomy with Drs. A. Fabian and V. Belokurov. He intends to earn a PhD in Astrophysics and become a professor of physics destined for a career of research, instruction, and outreach. He will specifically study the co-evolution of active galactic nuclei (AGN) and their host galaxies at various wavelengths.
