Honors College

Dean's Update:

    We have a few spots left for Mr. Zimmerman's presentation. This is someone who runs the ad campaigns for companies you know and owns a piece of several major teams. Don't miss this!

    Jordan Zimmerman is Founder and Chairman of Zimmerman Advertising, headquartered in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida; the 14th largest-ranked advertising agency in the country, with published billings in excess of $2 billion. In addition, he shares ownership in both the Florida Panthers and Tampa Bay Lightning, NHL Hockey teams.

  • Scholarship for you!

    The Common Knowledge Scholarship Foundation awards scholarships through the use of internet-based quiz competitions and this semester, we are offering two unique scholarship opportunities for students at University of South Florida. The Business School Scholarship and Future Teachers Scholarship are designed to reward students for demonstrating their knowledge of the material they are learning in their classes. This semester's topics are Accounting and Classroom Management, respectively.

    These scholarships are only open to students at select universities and University of South Florida is on the list because students from your school scored well in similar scholarships last semester. The quizzes follow standard textbook material and are scheduled to coincide with the midterm and final exams.

    Business School Scholarship - $250
    Future Teachers Scholarship - $250

    Quiz Dates
    Midterm Quiz: Available February 7 - 27
    Final Quiz: Available April 4 - 19
    (Students with the highest cumulative scores win the scholarship)

  • Summer/Fall 2009 Registration

    Summer/Fall 2009 registration begins Monday, March 23. In preparation for registration, please call 813-974-3087 to schedule your advising appointment. If you plan to graduate in summer or fall 2009, please make sure to meet with your departmental major advisor prior to registration to confirm that you will meet all necessary requirements.

  • Spring 2009 Withdrawal Deadline

    Please note that the last date to withdraw from a spring 2009 course without academic penalty is Saturday, March 14. If you are considering withdrawing from a course, please see an Honors Advisor to discuss potential academic/financial complications from the withdrawal.

  • What to do if your Honors Professor is not there when the class starts

    Before anyone leaves, call the Honors College office at 974-3087.

  • A job for you

Demo food products during the 8 On Your Side Health & Fitness Expo - This is the Expo associated with the Gasparilla Distance Classic Run. Including cheese, nutrition bars, milk and others. Some foods require microwave preparation.

    Friday February 26th 8 am - 9 pm
    Saturday February 27th 5 am - 6 pm

    Pay is contracted $10 an hour. Parking Garage Fee of $6 will be reimbursed. You will be paid via check on premise after your hours worked. Dress is white shirt, black pants, no shorts, capris are acceptable. Wear comfortable, covered shoes, you'll be on your feet on the uncarpeted convention center floor. Black apron will be provided.

  • Sacred Leaves Program

    This year's Sacred Leaves program at USF is entitled "Comparative Mysticism of the Middle Ages" and includes a keynote address by Michael Sells of University of Chicago, a prominent scholar of Sufi spirituality. Dr. Sells' address will take place on Thurs. Feb. 19 at 7 p.m., in Traditions Hall at the Alumni Center, entitled: "Mysticism, Longing and the Erotic in the Writings of 13th-Century Sufi Master Ibn al-Arabi".

    The line-up of symposium presenters includes emerging scholars from five countries, who will treat connections among Judaism, Christianity and Islam.     The Latin American Medical Student Association is hosting a wonderful opportunity for students interested in pursuing medical careers

  • Internship Possibility with the National Cancer Institute

    The National Cancer Institute's Health Communications Internship Program is ideal for anyone graduating in May 2009 and looking for an internship that pays very well. Specific program information may be found on the attached link. The application deadline is March 3rd.

  • Interested in the FBI?

    The FBI is interested in students with a number of backgrounds including the sciences. They will be on campus Wednesday, February 11th from Noon - 2PM in the Business Building Atrium. Students who are interested in internships and employment with them should feel free to visit with them at that time. The FBI and CIA are also both planning on attending the Public Service Fair on February 26th in the Marshall Center. More information on the Public Service Fair is available on the Career Center website www.career.usf.edu.

  • PRESENTERS FOR CONFERENCE IN WASHINGTON

    Dr. Yavneh is putting together a roundtable of students for the National Collegiate Honors College Conference in October, 2009. Since the theme of the conference is "Honors in a Global Context," she is looking for students who would like to speak about their international experiences combining volunteerism and research. If you are interested in participating, please email her as soon as possible, as the deadline is February 20th.

  • National Collegiate Honors Council conference proposal submissions due February 20

    Time is running out to submit your proposal for the National Collegiate Honors Council conference. The deadline for submission is February 20. Please visit the NCHC website to view the conference proposal pages for presenting your ideas. In addition to the inspiring location of Washington DC, the conference will feature exciting speakers, workshops, presentations and poster sessions. Proposals are being accepted in the following areas:

  • Pre-Professional Health Honors Society

    Attention Pre-professional Health Students:

    Alpha Epsilon Delta; a Pre-Professional Health Honors Society will have a meeting Wednesday, Feb. 11th at 5:30pm in MSC 3708. Dr. Steven Specter, who is on the Admissions Committee at the USF College of Medicine will speak about how to be a great applicant for Medical school.

    Don't miss out on this great speaker. You can also pick up an application and see what AED has to offer for you!

  • Advising Information Available Online

    The Honors College Web site has seen some changes over the Winter Break. There is a new tab on the main menu for Advising information. Not sure what you need to graduate from the Honors College or how to fulfill your foreign language requirement? Click on the Advising tab to check it out! While you're there, be sure to click on Health Professions to visit the Health Professions Blog written by our very own Ms. Hill. There is a growing amount of good and timely information for those interested in a career in the health professions.

RED - National Fellowships

  • Laura W. Bush Travel Fellowship

    The Fellowship provides supplemental funding for applicant designed proposals to conduct brief activities in a foreign country related to the mandate of the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) - using education, natural sciences, social and human sciences, culture, and/or communication and information to build strong ties among nations.

    The deadline for applications is March 1, 2009.

  • Washington Center Opportunities--ABROAD!

    The Washington, D.C.-London Program
    The Washington, D.C.-Oxford Program
    The Washington, D.C.-Sydney Program

    Designed as a seminar in the nation's capital followed by an internship placement with programming and rigorous academic study in one of the above cities, each program will help students gain a valuable comparative understanding of culture and professional life--an important asset in today's global workforce.

    Students are eligible to receive $4,500 in financial aid toward these programs

  • Lead the Change... the Change Initiative

    CHANGE (Oxfam America) offers college students entering their sophomore or junior:
    *exposure to international development issues
    *skills for Oxfam campus campaigns

    Applications are due on April 1st, 2009. Selected students are then invited to participate in a week-long training in Boston, July 18-24, 2009, which is organized and paid for by Oxfam.

    The strategic plan of the University of South Florida seeks to expand world-class interdisciplinary research, creative and scholarly endeavors and to expand local and global engagement initiatives. The University Scholars program recognizes students who fulfill the University goals of community engagement, undergraduate research, and global citizenship on both transcript and diploma.     Controversy, USF's new undergraduate social issues journal, is now accepting submissions for its premier publication. The deadline to submit your work is March 1st.
