Dean's Update: This is the first of our weekly Honors College Newsletters. We hope that this will cut down on the number of emails you get from us and that you will carefully read each week’s announcements. Generally speaking, the announcements in the newsletter will also appear on blackboard and on the Honors website. If there are announcements we need to make between newsletters, we will post them on both Blackboard and the website and then put them in the next weekly newsletter.

For those of you who are in the first semester of Honors Thesis, please remember that your prospectus and the Prospectus Approval Form are due in the Honors College office no later than 5PM on Friday, February 29.

In an effort to ensure that graduating seniors majoring in Biology, Microbiology and Marine Biology will be able to register for their critical science courses in Summer and Fall 08, the Department of Biology has announced a Senior Initiative. As part of this initiative, the department has placed permit restrictions on the following critical courses offered in Summer 08: all Microbiology sections (MCB 3020C), all Genetics labs (PCB 3063L), and all Cell Biology labs (PCB 3023L). Specific information about Fall 08 Senior Initiative courses should be available by March 6. A follow-up email will be sent at that time.
-
As an Honors College student, you will most likely not be impacted by this initiative. HOWEVER, TO BE ABLE TO REGISTER FOR ANY OF THE COURSES DESIGNATED BY THE SENIOR INITIATIVE, YOU MUST REQUEST A PERMIT. In order to receive a permit for one of these courses (the courses are identified on the OASIS schedule search with a senior initiative flyer), you will need to contact Ms. Sturrock ( asturrock@honors.usf.edu) no later than March 19, 2008. In the email, please include your name, major, USF ID, the course reference number, course prefix and number and specific section of the intended course

I have been noticing “guests” in the Honors College Lounge/Computer Lab; these facilities are only for Honors students. Please do not invite others to share the space.

You can “Dye the Dean”. Your Honors College Student Council is raising funds for the American Cancer Society. In the Honors College office are 4 containers, each with a picture of Dr. Silverman with different colored hair. On April 7, the Student Council will count the money in each container. Early on the morning of April 7, Dr. Silverman’s hair will then be dyed the color of the picture on the container with the most money. Bagels, juice and coffee will be served at the “Dye-in”. Please donate to this cause – we need to eliminate cancer as a disease in your lifetime.
