Honors College

Dean's Update:

    Are you planning to study abroad or volunteer abroad between Winter 2014 and Summer 2015? Then consider entering the Honors College photo contest!

    Who: All USF Tampa Honors students that have participated in an international experience (study abroad or volunteer abroad) between Winter 2014 and Summer 2015

    What: This year’s theme is FAMILY.

    Contestants will submit one picture along with a brief description (3 sentences maximum) describing how their picture relates to this year’s theme of “Family.” We welcome unique interpretations!

    Honors College students will vote to choose the finalists, and a panel of professional photographers will decide the winners.  Winning photographs will be displayed in a public exhibition. The top 3 winners will receive a scholarship prize!

    The picture and statement should be submitted to Indira Ranaweera at by August 1, 2015. It is strongly encouraged that pictures are submitted as soon as possible after the completion of the program. Please note that photos submitted to the Honors photo contest may not be used for other photo competitions.


  • New! - Applications for USFs Golden Bull Award Now Open

    The Golden Bull Award is one of USF's highest honors given annually to undergraduate and graduate students who embody the spirit of USF and have demonstrated its values. Recipients must exemplify exceptional leadership and service to the University and the community. Each year up to 20 deserving students will receive the award.

  • New! - Honors Art Show Monday March 9

    ATTENTION all Honors students, faculty, staff, and friends of the College:  

    The Honors Art Show will be held Monday, March 9.  At this event we will be displaying the artwork created by our very own talented student artists!  Please stop by the Honors College between 12pm-2pm to stroll through our hallways, check out the artwork, and chat with the student artists themselves.  

    Light refreshments will be available for purchase.  All proceeds will go to the Honors College Student Council's Relay for Life team.    

  • New! - Notice of Cancellation

    The Thesis Research Rescue Honors College workshops scheduled for Fridays Feb 20th , 27th , March 13th , and 20th are cancelled.

    If you need assistance, please go to the Library home page and sign up for a research consultation request by clicking on Make an Appointment on the website in the Get Librarian Help box on the right. You may also sign up for any of the regularly scheduled Research Rescue workshops held at the library.



  • New! - Schwarzman Scholars One Year Masters Degree in China

    On Friday, March 20 a special guest will be on campus.  Ms. Alyssa Trometter from the Schwarzman Scholars Fellowship will be on campus speaking to students about this selective global fellowship program.

    Schwarzman Scholars, inspired by the Rhodes scholarship, is a program designed to help future leaders meet the challenges of the 21st century and beyond by preparing them to better understand China's culture, economy, governance and motivations. Scholars will study for a one-year Master's degree in public policy, international relations, or economics and business at Tsinghua University, one of China's most prestigious institutes of higher education.

    A Schwarzman Scholar should demonstrate extraordinary leadership potential, the ability to anticipate paradigm changes, strong intellectual capacity and exemplary character.  You can learn more about the Schwarzman Scholars Fellowship here:

  • Honors College Graduation Certification Form now available

    The Honors College Graduation Certification Form is now available and ready to be filled out by those students graduating in Spring 2015! Please fill out the form by going to The form must be filled out by all Honors College graduates, regardless of their plans on attending the Honors Commencement Ceremony. If you cannot access the form and you are graduating, please contact Kelly Brabant at as soon as possible.

  • Paid Tutoring Position

    The Holcombe and Jenkins Scholarship Programs are looking for tutors for the Spring 2015 semester in the following courses:

    Finite Mathematics (MGF 1106)

    Vibrations (EML 4220)

    Principles of Biology for Non-Majors (BSC 1005)

    Electromagnetics (EEL 4471)

    Human Anatomy and Physiology II (BSC 2094C)

    Applicants MUST have an overall 3.3 GPA, have taken the respective course at USF, and have received at least an A- in the course.   • Honors Summer Internship Course

    Thinking about doing an internship in summer 2015? Interested in getting course credit? 

    Honors is excited to announce that we will be offering a variable credit, online internship course in summer 2015. The course is designed for students who are working in a field and want to receive academic credit through this online option. The course is open to all majors and all student levels. The course will satisfy summer hours and upper-level!

  • New! - STEM Graduate School Prep Information Session

    Do you plan to apply for graduate school in a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering or Math) field? Are you looking to gain insight into the graduate school application process? Attend this upcoming virtual information session!

    Please join us on Wednesday, March 25 for a virtual information session sponsored by the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. Ms. Tracy Morizio will be speaking to students (via Skype) about application strategies for graduate school applications as well as providing information to students regarding graduate programs at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.

  • New! - Fulbright Grants for Teaching or Research Abroad -- Information Sessions

    Juniors (rising seniors) and graduating seniors - consider applying this application cycle for a Fulbright Post-Graduate Research/Study Grant or English Teaching Assistantship (ETA). Click here for a list of countries and opportunities: You must be a US citizen to apply. Some countries have a language requirement and/or other eligibility requirements.  USF students have researched or taught English overseas through the Fulbright program in countries like the United Kingdom, Germany, Norway, Mexico, Malaysia, Serbia and Barbados.

    On Wednesday, April 1 and Monday, April 6, Ms. Lauren Chambers (the USF Fulbright Program advisor) will be holding information sessions for students interested in the Fulbright US Student program and planning to apply for a Fulbright Research/Study Grant or ETA. You can sign up for one of two dates (held in ALN 252) through the Upcoming Events Calendar on the ONS website: 

    If you are interested in applying make an appointment to meet with Ms. Chambers as soon as you can through eScheduler: Choose Office of National Scholarships as the Advising Area and Fulbright as the sub-area. She can help you assess your competitiveness. Do not count yourself out!

  • New! - Interested in pursuing a graduate degree in the United Kingdom?

    Juniors (rising seniors) - if you have a high GPA (>3.8), and are an ambitious and accomplished student who has big plans for the future (potentially including a PhD or master’s degree in the United Kingdom), then this invitation may be for you!

    We are particularly interested in students who are graduating in December 2015, May 2016 or August 2016.

    Funding sources for graduate school in the United Kingdom include national scholarships like the Rhodes, Marshall, Fulbright, Frost or Gates Cambridge.

    If you are interested in these opportunities, please send Ms. Chambers an email at along with a one-page resume and unofficial transcript or make an appointment with the Office of National Scholarships through eScheduler.

    Most of these (but not all!) are for US citizens. If you are an international student, we have opportunities for you as well. Those opportunities can be found on the front page of our website

  • Congratulations to Michael Calzadilla!

    Michael, an Honors College senior double majoring in Physics and Mathematics, has been named a Gates Cambridge Scholar for 2015. He is the first USF recipient of this scholarship and one of 40 selected from the US. This global scholarship, funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, provides funding for graduate work at Cambridge University for intellectually outstanding students who have a capacity for leadership and a commitment to improving the lives of others.

    At Cambridge Michael will study for an MPhil in Astronomy and he intends to earn a PhD in Astrophysics and become a professor of physics destined for a career of research, instruction, and outreach.

  • Congratulations to Evan Little

    Congratulations to Honors College Junior Evan Little! Evan has received a Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship to study abroad in Uppsala, Sweden. At Uppsala University, he will be able to continue his research in alternative energy in an environment of individual learning and self-discovery.

    The USF deadline to apply for a summer or fall study abroad program for Gilman funding is January 13, 2015. For more information regarding the Gilman Scholarship, please visit:

  • New! - HCSC Leadership Series Session 4 Career Services

    Unsure what to do after graduation? Want to know of any internships for your field? Need help crafting the perfect resume or cover letter? Come listen to Mr. Russ Coughenour, Assistant Vice President of USF Career Services, as he speaks about the resources his office makes available to students. Learn how to interview, write a resume, and much more. The session will be held on Thursday, March 12th in JPH 1313 from 4:30 - 5:30 PM. Light refreshments provided. This session, like all the Leadership Series sessions, will count as a Fresh 5 event. Attend at least 2 sessions and you will be eligible to attend the last session with President Genshaft!   • New! - Fall 2015-Spring 2016 Housing Contracts

    Students who no longer plan to live in the Honors LLC or on campus next year, MUST cancel their housing contracts. This can be found on the housing portal. Failure to cancel your contract may result in cancellation fees.

    Marisa Yunker will be holding a focus group to determine how our marketing resources can be best allocated in the Honors LLC to serve our most important customer: YOU! She'll be asking you about what works and what doesn't when it comes to reaching students about our events. Snacks and refreshments will be provided for those who attend!

  • Upcoming Model United Nations Conference

    USF will be hosting a Model United Nations Conference on March 14, 2015. e conference is open to all students who are interested in international relations and the Model UN. The conference begins at 9 am and will be held in the Research Building on the USF Tampa campus. Registration will be in the lobby of the Research Building and the conference is being held in the Oak View Room. There is a $10 cover fee. Students in the Honors College are invited to attend. This event and the team hosting it are excellent opportunities to bolster a CV, cultivate leadership experience, and demonstrate in a competitive and celebrated context an interest in and proficiency for an internal perspective and proficiency with global policy.   • CPRAEDFirst Aid Certification with AED

    Alpha Epsilon Delta will be holding their semi-annual CPR/AED/First Aid Workshop through Wishart Safety, Inc. This certification is a 2-year, Adult and Pediatric, American Heart Association Certification. It is being held Sunday, March 15th from 11am-3pm in MSC 2709. We are offering this course to Alpha Epsilon Delta members for $45, all of USF students and staff for $55, and non-USF individuals or anyone paying the day of regardless of your affiliation, $60.   • Villa La Paz 5K Charity Run

    Come out and support the Villa la Paz Foundation by participating in an exciting and fulfilling event hosted by USF Pre-med AMSA! You can walk, jog, or run this scenic route located behind Sycamore fields on the corner of USF Holly Drive and USF Sycamore Drive. For more information please visit See you there!

  • MEDLIFE at USF Meetings

    Do you want to volunteer abroad this summer? Want to assist in a medical mobile clinic in Peru? Well then come out to a MEDLIFE at USF's general body meetings to find out more. Each summer we get a group together to go to either Lima or Cuzco in Peru to assist in the running of medical mobile clinics. While there we will also participate in the improvement of infrastructure through the building of bathrooms, staircases, helping to build schools, and many other opportunities. Members that have come back from volunteering say it's one of the best experiences they've had so far and many want to go back again. So come out to a meeting and learn about the trips, fundraising, and other things the club is doing this semester!!! The meeting dates are 1/29, 2/12, 2/26, 3/12, and 3/26 with each meeting being held in MSC 2707 at 6 p.m. If you are unable to make it find us on Bullsync as well as Facebook!   • Camp Boggy Creek Chapter at USF

    The Camp Boggy Creek Chapter at USF is in affiliation with the non-profit pediatric camp. This club focuses on volunteering and fund-raising for children with chronic & life threatening illness by participating in weekend retreats to Camp Boggy Creek! This semester, we will be doing pediatric-oriented volunteering with CBC, Shriner's Hospital, Hope Lodge, Ronald McDonald House, and Relay for Life.   • Recruiting Undergraduate Students for a Summer Research Institute


    The Florida Mental Health Institute (FMHI) at the University of South Florida is in the process of recruiting up to 12 undergraduate students nationally to participate in a highly selective Summer Research Institute (SRI) funded by the National Institute of Mental Health. The SRI@FMHI is a ten week summer program designed for students interested in building their research skills within the context of mental health to help them prepare for a Senior Thesis and/or graduate school. Students receive a $4,000 research stipend, up to $400 to support travel expenses, as needed, and research project support funding. The dates for the 2015 SRI@FMHI are May 28th, 2015 through August 5th, 2015. The application deadline is March 6, 2015 and the application form may be obtained at or by contacting Paul Stiles at
