Honors College

Dean's Update:

Here is an on-campus summer research program designed for Undergraduates who are interested in conducting research related to mental illness and related disorders. The 10-week program will provide students with the opportunity to work with a faculty member on a research project in an area of the student's interest as well as to obtain practical skills and training on research ethics. The NIMH funding will allow us to provide a $4000 stipend to participating students. We would appreciate it if you would notify students in the Honors College of our program so they may apply if they are interested. Applications are due by March 16, 2012.

  • Special Fall Class particularly good for those interested in Psychology, Social Work or Medicine, but others are invited as well

Are you interested in attending medical school or becoming a psychologist? Do you want to submit a competitive application to graduate school that includes relevant clinical experience? If interested, consider enrolling in the Fall 2012 Honors College service-learning course that offers select students (course is limited to 12) an opportunity to obtain hands-on clinical experience by working as a volunteer 211 Crisis hotline counselor. Not only is 211 Crisis Hotline experience valued when applying to clinical graduate programs, the skills attained from this course will be indispensable if you eventually work as a health care professional. 211 Crisis hotline counselors assess callers for risk of suicide, sexual trauma, substance abuse, and other crisis events and provide appropriate intervention. Because of the demanding and sensitive nature of this placement, an interview and background check are required by the agency prior to the start of this class. Only students who are accepted to be enrolled will receive training to become nationally certified in sexual trauma, substance abuse, and suicide. The background check and training must be completed before the start of the fall semester. All students will receive ongoing supervision. On average, six to eight hours per week will be spent at the agency working as a suicide hotline counselor. Course topics include an overview of theory and practice, suicide risk factors, assessment of risk, indirect self-destructive behaviors, psychiatric illness, and substance abuse. If interested, please contact Dr. Brown by email at lmb@usf.edu and note in the subject line: 211 Crisis Hotline Honors Course. Lisa M. Brown, Ph.D. Associate Professor

The applications are now available for Honors College Competitive Scholarships for 2012-2013.  Scholarships range from $500 to $2000 a semester, and some do not consider financial need.  Application deadline is April 15th.

  • Fundraising Event for Free Healthcare Clinics in Tampa Bay

Does your organization want to be part of an annual fundraiser for free health clinics serving the indigent in Tampa Bay? If so, we have a fantastic opportunity for you and your organization to make a huge impact for these clinics and for the patients who are in dire need of them. We are honors students conducting a senior honors thesis concerning three amazing clinics in particular - BRIDGE Healthcare Clinic, Red Crescent Clinic of Tampa Bay, and the Judeo-Christian Health Clinic, Inc. We are attempting to organize an annual fundraiser for these clinics, since they provide so much to the community and receive so little from us. This event does not have to occur this semester however, we would like to have your support for planning a unique fundraising event in the near future. Please let us know if you would like to be involved in the planning and/or overseeing of a fundraiser of this nature. Please contact Jessica Brumble (jbrumble@mail.usf.edu), Marta Jaszczolt (mjaszczo@mail.usf.edu), or Sonali Sharma (ssharma5@mail.usf.edu) for more information on how you can make an impact in your community!
