Honors College

Dean's Update:

    The Honors College is pleased to offer a special opportunity for those students intending to graduate in Spring 2013 or Summer 2013 as part of IDH 5975. The primary goal of the course is to assist students in the preparation of a completed prospectus, including a thesis director, by October 12, 2012. The course is open to all students in their first semester of thesis work (Fall 2012), with a particular emphasis on students who are not yet sure of the the direction of their work or how to develop a prospectus.

    The course will have limited enrollment on a first-come, first-served basis. It will meet on Friday mornings for 1 1/2 hour sessions through October 19, 2012 and will be led by two senior professors experienced in mentoring Honors Thesis students. One hundred percent of students who moved through an experimental model of this program and were surveyed recommended the course as a "must."

  • Pharmacy Information Session

    Pre-pharmacy students are encouraged to sign up for an Admissions "InPHARMation Session." These sessions provide prospective students with an overview of USF''s PharmD program, admissions requirements, and application process.

    InPHARMation sessions are hosted in the College of Pharmacy from 1-2pm. Upcoming information sessions:

  • Attention Future Dentists

    The deadline for the Beltran Brothers Honors College Endowed Dental Scholarship has been extended until August 25, 2012. 

     Preference will be given but not limited to the following:

    • Currently enrolled Junior or Senior with pre-dental school course of study
    • Full-time Honors College Student on the Tampa campus
    • Have taken the Dental Assessment Test and scored 20 or above
    • Bi-lingual in English and Spanish

  • Fall 2012 Internship Opportunity Data Management Web Design

    Are you interested in web design or data management?

    Do you have basic computer skills and/or entry level experience in design?

    Would you like the opportunity to compete for an incredible opportunity to work for the Honors College throughout your college career?

    Do you want to boost your resume with real-life experience and training?

    The Honors College is recruiting incoming freshmen to participate in a semester-long training and internship opportunity. The current Honors College Webmaster is looking for a replacement for himself at the end of next spring. Students will work with the Honors technology department on real design and data management projects and will directly impact the web presence of the Honors College.

    Three students will be offered positions in the Spring 2013 semester as PAID Assistant Webmasters for the college. The most successful student will be offered the opportunity to become the Honors College Webmaster beginning in Fall 2013. Students could remain in these positions, if successful, for the remainder of the undergraduate career. Pay is extremely competitive, and hours are very flexible. Work is year-round, so summer employment is available.

    A successful candidate MUST be:

    Extremely self-motivated and able to work with little or no supervision

    • Willing to learn, or have entry level skills with: ASP, SQL, HTML, CSS, and JavaScript.

    • Able to work 10-20 hours a week during the internship and

    • Willing to work 20 hours  a week during the Spring 2013 position

    **Note**: Students not willing to commit to at least a year of employment with the Honors College after the internship need not apply.

    The student selected as the next Honors College Webmaster must be willing to work 20-40 hours a week and expect to remain with the College for at least 2 years.

  • Juniors Attend a National Scholarships Informational Workshop

    Workshops will be held for juniors interested in applying for a national scholarship and learning more about the Office of National Scholarships. Three scholarships will be held the week of May 21.

  • Want to apply for a national scholarship Attend a workshop

    The Office of National Scholarship will hold workshops for sophomores to introduce students to our office and scholarships that may be eligible to apply for. Workshops will be held on Tuesday, May 15 (9am), Thursday, May 17 (12:30pm) and Friday, May 18 (3pm).

  • Research Assistantship

    Research Assistant: This project is the first step in developing a model for word learning in bilingual children. The study consists of two sessions. In the first session the children are given language and hearing tests. In the second session the children are given the experimental task.

    The children are being asked to listen to fake words and sort them into Spanish or English. We are using a new methodology called mouse tracking where the mouse pointer is tracked during the entire decision''''s similar to eye tracking, but a lot cheaper.

    I am looking for someone who:Â

    • will work for course credit or as their thesis. We are collecting a lot of data, so they would be encouraged (and mentored) to use one aspect of the project as their Honors Thesis.Â
    • I also need someone who is a native Spanish speaker
    • The research assistant would also need to be able to pass a background check since we will be fingerprinted so that we can enter the schools
    • Is available to collect data before school (e.g., 6:30-8:00 am) and after school (e.g., 2:30-4:00 pm) for 3-4 days a week (this time commitment is the maximum I would ask. Some weeks may be less).
    • It is also preferable that he/she have their own transportation to and from the testing sites.

    This project would be most interesting for students interested in bilingual language acquisition in children. We will be working with kindergartners and their parents. I will provide all materials and training necessary. I will also cover the cost of fingerprinting. The only thing I can''''t do is pay for time or their gas.

  • Undergraduate Research Assistants Needed

    The Cognitive Aging Lab is a large and very active lab within the School of Aging Studies that conducts research on &ldquocognitive training&rdquo &ndash the process of engaging older adults in a series of cognitive activities targeting higher level cognitive functions as well as lower level perceptual abilities in the hopes of training the brain to perform better on these types of tasks. We are looking for research assistants to help with participant recruitment, data management, participant management, and conducting cognitive training classes.

    If you are a freshman, sophomore, or a junior, have at least a 3.25 GPA, and are interested in gaining research experience in the Cognitive Aging Lab starting asap, please e-mail Dr. Jennifer O''Brien at or  A minimum committment of one year is required.

  • Volunteer Research Opportunity

    Volunteer undergraduate research opportunity with a Acute Lung Injury & Pulmonary Arterial Hypertension project. Students should have at least a 3.5 GPA and be able to volunteer 16-20 hours per week.
