Honors College

Dean's Update:

    I have been thinking about E-Portfolios and how valuable they might be as you apply for jobs and to graduate and professional programs. An E-Portfolio is pretty easy to establish and would take but minutes per week to maintain. Your Portfolio could contain your writing, videos, journals, pictures, research, study abroad experiences and any other information you choose to include. You alone would have the ability to add subtract and modify the portfolio and we could proudly house and showcase your portfolio on the Honors College website for all to see.

    We can help you set up the portfolio and maintain it (although it is simple enough that even I could do it!). If you have Facebook or Myspace page or your own website, you are already on the way to an e-folio. I would like to invite you to be among the first to create an Honors E-folio. All you need to do is email me or schedule an appointment. I can almost guarantee that the process of setting up the portfolio is easy and fun, maintenance is minimal and the potential value is great.

    Please don't let this opportunity pass you by.

  • USF Pediatrics Reach Out and Read Program

    You can make a positive impact on the lives of children and their families by participating in the Reach Out and Read  (ROR)  early literacy program in which you can help to foster cognitive and emotional development in young children!

    See also One of the unique benefits of this program is that after you have  served as a volunteer reader for four times, then you can also begin to shadow a pediatrician (~ 2 hours a week), as long as you continue as a volunteer reader!   (~ 2 hours a week). This program is available at the USF Health South and Health Park Clinics.   Please contact Ellen Kent, MPH, at, to sign up for  the summer ROR training session  which will be held OFF campus at  the new USF Health South building,       at 2A-Tampa General Drive   nearby (but not inside!) Tampa General Hospital :   July 2, 3-4 pm.   Thank you!   **Please note that this weekly ROR volunteer opportunity takes place off campus, and the  required training session also takes place off campus.

  • Honors College Summer Commencement Ceremony

    The Summer 2010 Honors College graduation ceremony will take place on Friday, August 6th at 2:00 PM in Traditions Hall at the Alumni Center. Specific information will be emailed to potential summer graduates by the middle of July.

  • New IDH 3400 Course offered in Fall 2010

    IDH 3400--003 Catherine Batsche, T/R 12:30 - 1:15 in SVC 1099: Applied Research Methods and Problem-Based Learning: The College of Behavioral and Community Sciences (BCS) received a grant to develop an applied research methods course using an innovative teaching model known as problem-based learning.  Seven faculty members from the college worked throughout the summer, 2010 to develop four problem-based case studies that are intended to help students learn to apply knowledge and skills they gained in Research Methods classes.  As a student in this class, you will have three opportunities.  First, you will get to apply what you have learned in your research methods courses to real-world research projects as a member of a research team.  Second, you will learn new research methods and dissemination strategies.  Third, you will pilot-test selected research case studies and provide feedback to the faculty to enhance their effectiveness for use as problem-based learning modules.  What research problems will you work with? The case studies deal with research problems related to substance abuse among college students, incarcerated mothers, addiction to pain medication, and behavioral health interventions and treatments.  Working with other students on your research team, you will decide the approach that you think best responds to the research questions and will design the research project accordingly.  You will also gain experience responding to grant requests, preparing grant proposals for peer review, preparing research posters, and making research presentations. What is problem-based learning? Problem-based learning (PBL) is an instructional method that uses "real world" problems as a context for students to apply critical thinking and problem solving skills as they acquire the essential concepts of the course. PBL typically includes the following steps:
    1. Students are presented with a problem (e.g., a case study, video, newspaper article). Students (in groups) organize their ideas and previous knowledge related to the problem, define the broad nature of the problem, and define a solution they think best responds to the problem.
    2. Through discussion, students pose questions, called "learning issues," on aspects of the problem that they don’t yet understand or for which they need more information. These learning issues are recorded by the group.
    3. Students decide which issues will be followed up by the whole group, and which issues can be assigned to individuals, who later teach the rest of the group.
    4. Students select an approach to solve the problem and present their solutions to the rest of the class.
    What is the faculty role in PBL? The instructor guides and supports student initiatives rather than lectures students as they seek solutions to the problems.  Who can take this class? Students with majors/minors in a social or behavioral science field such as Psychology; Criminology; Social Work; Gerontology; Long Term Care Administration; Speech, Language, & Hearing Sciences; Interpreter Training;  Behavioral Healthcare; Public Health; Sociology; Anthropology and other related disciplines.  Students should have already completed or be concurrently enrolled in statistics and research methods classes.  This course will assume students already have some knowledge of basic statistics and research methods.

  • Healthcare in Panama: Beyond the Classroom

    Healthcare in Panama: Beyond the Classroom

    Looking for a different kind of learning experience? You will engage in 14 weeks of coursework prior to a 10-day immersion experience in Panama (participation in the trip from December  11 - 20 is a required part of the course curriculum). The course will introduce you to the healthcare system in Panama and how it compares to that of the United States, Panamanian culture and society, and current issues facing developing countries.

    Although the course will focus on cultural comparison through the lens of the healthcare system, students of all majors are welcome to apply.

  • Gilman Winners

    USF’s Office of National Scholarships would like to extend our congratulations to Vadricka Etienne, Sam Van Ginhoven and Hannah Feig who recently received the prestigious Gilman award for their upcoming international studies. Sam Van Ginhoven will be studying  in Japan and focusing on Japanese language and culture. Hannah Feig plans to study sustainable development in Senegal.  Vadricka Etienne will be heading to the Dominican Republic to study Spanish and Caribbean culture.  Congratulations! We are so proud of you.

  • Psychology Research Assistants Needed

    Psychology Research Assistants Needed for Two Projects Effects of ethanol pretreatment in adolescent and adult animals on neurochemical responsivity in adulthood. In this experiment, we pretreat adolescent and adult animals with alcohol and assess later neurochemical responsivity to alcohol in adulthood by measuring levels of DA in the nucleus accumbens. This research includes technical skills such as stereotaxic surgery, alcohol administration and in vivo microdialysis working with a rodent model. Student must be able to commit for two semesters and be able to research for at least 10 hours per week. Binge ethanol treatment in adolescent and adult male rats: Alcohol consumption and the changing mesolimbic dopamine system In this series of experiments, we pretreat adolescent and adult animals with alcohol and assess later neurochemical functionality of the mesolimbic dopamine system in adulthood in the nucleus accumbens. We also will assess behavioral and metabolic changes in response to subsequent alcohol. This research includes technical skills such as stereotaxic surgery, alcohol administration and in vivo microdialysis working with a rodent model. Student Submissions

  • Calling all creative writers!

    Starting this fall the USF Honors College will be hosting a Creative Writers’ Club for the first time.  Students are invited to build a community with other writers and submit their writing for peer review. This group will work on larger group projects and help students develop their skills and enjoy the company and feedback of other writers.  All genres and types of writing are welcome. The first meeting will be held at the beginning of the fall semester. Feel free to contact for more information.
