Honors College

Dean's Update:

    Welcome to another great year at the USF Honors College!  We say hello this semester to the largest entering class in the history of the College, with 700 first-year students bringing lots of fresh perspectives, new ideas, and great energy to our halls.  I look forward to getting to know each of our new students over the coming weeks and months, and to hearing all about summer work/study/travel/fun experiences from our continuing students.  If you need anything to help with the transition to the new year, don't hesitate to ask me or any member of our excellent Honors College staff -- we're all here to help you!  The College offers numerous opportunities for learning, community engagement, and fun, so be sure to check this newsletter each week for information about all things Honors.  All the best to everyone for a great start to the semester!

    Applicants MUST have an overall 3.3 GPA, have taken the respective course at USF, and have received at least an A- in the course. Applications should be submitted by following the link provided and clicking on the "Apply to be a paid tutor" link.

  • Rising Seniors or those preparing to start the thesis process

    If you plan to start your Honors Thesis in the Fall 2015 semester, please make sure you sign up for the course as soon as possible.  To sign up, please do the following:

    • Go to the Online Forms page through the Honors College website: (thesis)
    • Select Online Thesis Forms.
    • Fill out the Thesis Registration Form page.
    • Once you receive the permit, you will need to register for the first semester of Thesis, IDH 5956 Honors Project.

  • ONS Week of Welcome Open House Event

    The Office of National Scholarships will be hosting an Open House on Thursday, August 27 from 1:00pm until 3:00pm in ALN271. Attend and learn about ONS and the national merit scholarship opportunities which fund study abroad, research, and internship experiences that help you achieve your future goals!  You will also be able to meet previous national scholarship recipients and have the opportunity to hear from them first-hand about their amazing adventures. 

  • Learn more about Nationally Competitive Merit Scholarships

    Attend an upcoming workshop to learn more about the Office of National Scholarships and the national scholarship opportunities that can fund your study abroad experience, do research or an internship or pursue graduate study. Workshops will be presented by year (Freshmen, Sophomore, Junior and Senior).

USF Honors College Student Council

  • New! - Honors College Student Council Fall Picnic

    Aloha, Honors students! Sunday, September 13th will be the Honors College Student Council annual Fall Picnic at Riverfront Park from 11 AM - 2 PM. This luau is a great way to meet new people, and interact with your professors and deans. We''ll have multiple outdoor games set up, as well as canoeing on the Hillsborough River! Free transportation to the event will be provided by Bull Runners in front of Juniper Poplar Hall and burgers and hot dogs grilled up by our very own Honors faculty will be served. Come dressed in Hawaiian attire to be entered into a raffle for a free Honors Council t-shirt! Hope to see you all there!

  • Honors College Student Council General Body Meeting

    Hello Honors College Students!
    Welcome to a new school year! The Honors College Student Council is excited to present you with all the great events and projects we have planned for this year! Come hear about them at our FIRST GENERAL BODY MEETING on Tuesday, September 8 at 5:30 PM at JPH1317. You'll get the chance to meet fellow honors students, learn about our volunteer and social events, and get informed about opportunities for leadership positions offered by the Honors Council. You'll also get to find out how to make connections and get involved in the Honors College through joining any of our three committees, all while enjoying some delicious PIZZA and potentially winning FREE T-SHIRTS!

USF Honors College Student Council


    This is a showing of the Common Read "Persepolis" by Marjane Satrapi. This film was a winner at the 2007 Cannes Film Festival. Honors Faculty Jeremy Gordon and Catherine Wilkins will be present to discuss the book with students.

    Monday September 28th

    Join us (in a galaxy far, far away), as we gear up for the release of Star Wars Episode VII - The Force Awakens. We will be showing the original version of A New Hope in all of its glory. (That's right ladies and gentlemen... that means Han will, indeed, shoot first.) We will have a Cosplay contest, so come dressed up in your best Star Wars costume! We'll be giving away some pretty sweet prizes to the winner! We look forward to seeing you there... and may the force be with you.

    As an honors student, you will be required to activate your free Employ-a-Bull account, as well as make a LinkedIn profile. Stop by this workshop with the Career Services office to find out how to use the Employ-a-Bull search engine to find exciting opportunities. Additionally, they will talk to you about how to make a professional LinkedIn profile. Snacks and refreshments will be provided.

  • Quantum Leap Farm Looking for Volunteers

    Do you need volunteer service hours? Are you interested in helping people with disabilities? Quantum Leap Farm is always in need of the precious labor required to take care of our farm, horses and clients. As a volunteer, you are an important member of our team! Horse experience is desired, but not required. Individuals and group volunteers are welcome. You need to be at least 16 years old.  This one's important: We respect the right of confidentiality for all our clients and volunteers. Our staff, volunteers, board members and anyone else providing services to Quantum Leap Farm must agree to keep confidential all medical, social, referral, personal and financial information regarding a client or another volunteer and his or her family.

  • Learning and Memory Lab Volunteer Opportunity

    Are you an excited, hardworking, independent student looking to enhance your experience at the University of South Florida? Then a volunteer position at the Neurobiology of Learning and Memory Lab may be the place for you. If you are interested in getting experience with experimental design, working in a lab, or learning scientific techniques, then this may be the opportunity you have been waiting for. The focus of our research includes understanding the cellular and molecular mechanisms of learning and memory in hopes of finding novel therapeutic targets to treat cognitive disorders, including Alzheimer's disease and schizophrenia.   • USF HOSA Future Health Professionals Club

    Are you interested or may be interested in a medical career? Are you looking for an organization to develop leadership skills and character but at the same time have fun and gain recognition at regional, state, and national competitions? Do you want to make a difference nation-wide towards HOSA's national service project of raising awareness and supporting the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society? Maybe you want to explore something new? This is the club for you!

    HOSA: Future Health Professionals aims to develop skills through motivation, recognition, and awareness to increase the delivery of compassionate, quality health care to the community. The national organization provides opportunities to increase knowledge, develop leadership skills, enhance character, gain friendships, build self-confidence, increase involvement in the local and national community, and so much more. Even if you're not interested in the medical field, this organization can help you become a more well-rounded individual!

    Our meetings dates are on Tuesdays (9/15, 10/6, 11/3, 11/24) from 7:30-8:30pm at MSC 2709. There will be free food! Come check us out!

  • Laboratory Volunteer Opportunity

    The Neurobiology of Learning and Memory Laboratory, located at USF Health's Byrd Alzheimer's Research Institute, is looking for volunteers to assist in day to day laboratory operations as well as carry out experiments. Under the direction of Edwin Weeber, Ph.D., our studies help us to better understand the cellular and molecular mechanisms of learning and memory as well as discover novel treatments for cognitive disorders such as Alzheimer's disease.   • Tips to increase your chances to get into medical school or graduate school

    If you are a pre-med student or plan to enroll in a graduate program related to medicine, you may consider adding biomedical research experience to your resume through an internship. Here is a link with more information on that: .  Finding an internship spot in a good research lab is not easy. But, there is help. The Office for Undergraduate Research (OUR)[] which is located in room LIB 210 can help you find a lab. Moreover, you can register for a "research experience" course through OUR. The courses are listed as IDS-2912 and IDS-4914. If you are an Honors College student, you can register through course IDH-4910. If you love nature, here is a research project you may be interested "Effect of plant extracts on inhibition of cancer cell proliferation. The USF Research Park includes the Tampa Bay Technology Incubator (TBTI) where several companies are involved in biomedical research. A biotech start-up company at TBTI by the name "Novel Biospectrum Technologies", Inc. (NBT for short) is doing cancer research and quite a few students have done an internship at that lab. Additionally these students were able to register for one of the courses mentioned above, and some presented a poster at the OUR colloquium. If you are an Honors College student, you may also do your thesis at the NBT research lab. If you want to get more details about the NBT research projects and available internships, visit the NBT website at and click on the tab "Internships". The page has general information about internships, and if you scroll down, you will see the box "List of available internships". The project mentioned above is the first one on that list. It is also listed in the Office for Undergraduate Research (OUR) as position #62.   • Camp Boggy Creek Chapter at USF 1st Meeting Officer Positions

    Hey Bulls!


    We are excited to announce the first meeting of the Fall for CBC at USF will be Sept 1st at 530 pm in MSC 3701! We will have free pizza, games and info with how to be involved for this fall semester!

    Our following meetings will be every other Tuesday at 530 in MSC 3705 (starting Sept 15th). 

    Camp Boggy Creek is a nonprofit pediatric organization that hosts camps for children with life threatening and chronic illnesses, and our club supports this mission by helping with the camp, as well as with other organizations in our area, such as Ronald Mcdonald House, Hope Lodge, and Shriners Hospital.

  • Camp Boggy Creek Chapter at USF

    The Camp Boggy Creek Chapter at USF is in affiliation with the non-profit pediatric camp. This club focuses on volunteering & fundraising for children with chronic & life threatening illness by participating in weekend retreats to Camp Boggy Creek! This fall we will be doing pediatric-oriented volunteering with both CBC, Shriner's Hospitals for Children, and Hope Lodge.
