Welcome to another great year at the USF Honors College! We say hello this semester to the largest entering class in the history of the College, with 700 first-year students bringing lots of fresh perspectives, new ideas, and great energy to our halls. I look forward to getting to know each of our new students over the coming weeks and months, and to hearing all about summer work/study/travel/fun experiences from our continuing students. If you need anything to help with the transition to the new year, don't hesitate to ask me or any member of our excellent Honors College staff -- we're all here to help you! New! - STEM Graduate Study in the United Kingdom at the University of Oxford
The Frost Scholarship Programme funds current students of the State University System of Florida (SUSF) to study one year, full-time Master's courses in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM subjects) at the University of Oxford. The Programme is supported by the generosity of the Phillip and Patricia Frost Philanthropic Foundation. Over the next three years, the Frost Scholarship Programme will offer ten scholarships each year. New! - Learn a critical language abroad in 7-10 weeks!
This workshop will discuss the Critical Language Scholarship Program (CLS). The CLS offers intensive summer language institutes overseas in fourteen critical need languages for summer 2016, with all expenses paid. The workshop will be held on October 9 at 10:00am in ALN 233. Funding for undergraduate research -- Goldwater Scholarships
You are invited to attend a workshop on the Goldwater Scholarship program, the most prestigious scholarship program in the country for undergraduate scientific research. The Goldwater Scholarship covers undergraduate expenses up to $7,500 for 1-2 years for students planning research careers in mathematics, natural sciences, or engineering. This opportunity is for sophomores and juniors, typically with a 3.9 GPA or higher. There will be two workshops, one held on September 25 at 11:00am in ALN 233 and another one on October 23 at 2pm in ALN 252. Put your brains to the test at the Honors College Student Council Brain Bowl on Wednesday, September 30th at JPH1319! Grab a team of four, and test your knowledge with over 150 peer-reviewed trivia questions based on topics varying from chemistry, to 90's TV, to Harry Potter. Snacks and drinks will be provided! If you wish to participate, please email David Ranson (firstname.lastname@example.org) and let him know who will be on your team by September 28th. Doors open at 6:30 PM for registered teams, and the event begins at 7 PM! This event will count towards your LLC Five requirement! Come hang out with your brain out, and win some sweet prizes!
This is a showing of the Common Read "Persepolis" by Marjane Satrapi. This film was a winner at the 2007 Cannes Film Festival. Honors Faculty Jeremy Gordon and Catherine Wilkins will be present to discuss the book with students.

New! - Tampa Theater tour and Movie Showing
Join the Honors LLC for a "Balcony to Backstage" tour of Historic Tampa Theatre to learn about secrets, stories, art, and architecture of the movie palace. The tour will last 90 minutes, and there will be a showing of the movie Phoenix (http://tampatheatre.org/movies/phoenix/) shortly after at 2:15. Honors will provide your transportation, along with your tour and movie tickets. All you need to bring is some cash for lunch! We will meet Saturday September 28th at 10:30 a.m. in the JP Lobby to drive over together.

New! - Pediatric Cancer Awareness Month Volunteers
September is Childhood Cancer awareness month! Pediatric cancers affects nearly 13,500 children in the US every year, with about 100 new cases reported in Tampa alone in the past year. If you are a student who would enjoy the opportunity to help raise awareness and raise money for the children battling cancer at St. Josephs Children's Hospital, then please contact Brianna Borsheim (firstname.lastname@example.org). As a volunteer, you would be able to help raise awareness on campus, make an event to get other students involved, and be able to deliver the money raised and gift-bags to the children on the Oncology and Hematology floors of St. Josephs Children's Hospital. This opportunity would allow you to help some of the youngest heroes in our Tampa Community!

New! - USF in Northern Ireland Study Abroad Opportunity
Interested in learning about peace building and conflict reconciliation? Then join the Global and International Affairs Department for USF in Northern Ireland program on Conflict Transformation. Over the course of three weeks students will get the opportunity to attend lectures led by leading academics hosted by Queens University and will be able to visit locations around Belfast that have been impacted by this country's history. Some of the issues that will be addressed in these lectures and site visits are types of transitional justice, understanding conflict, mediating conflict, and inclusion and exclusion in transitional societies.
Please join us at our second general body meeting this Wednesday, September 23 at 4:30PM - 6:00PM in MSC 2709! Our society offers volunteer, networking, and philanthropic opportunities. Our guest speakers this week will be a panel of LECOM DO 4th year students: Bill Mazalewski and peers. They will talk about their experiences at Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine. USF HOSA Future Health Professionals Princeton Raffle
Looking for a Princeton course? USF HOSA is raffling one! Each ticket is $20 and you can submit more than one ticket. The winner of the raffle will be announced on Friday, December 4th, 2015 (end of fall semester). The last day to submit a ticket is Thursday, December 3rd, 2015. The winner can choose a MCAT, LSAT, GMAT, or GRE Princeton course.

Are you interested or may be interested in a medical career? Are you looking for an organization to develop leadership skills and character but at the same time have fun and gain recognition at regional, state, and national competitions? Do you want to make a difference nation-wide towards HOSA's national service project of raising awareness and supporting the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society? Maybe you want to explore something new? This is the club for you!
HOSA: Future Health Professionals aims to develop skills through motivation, recognition, and awareness to increase the delivery of compassionate, quality health care to the community. The national organization provides opportunities to increase knowledge, develop leadership skills, enhance character, gain friendships, build self-confidence, increase involvement in the local and national community, and so much more. Even if you're not interested in the medical field, this organization can help you become a more well-rounded individual!
Our meetings dates are on Tuesdays (9/15, 10/6, 11/3, 11/24) from 7:30-8:30pm at MSC 2709. There will be free food! Come check us out!
