Honors College

Dean's Update:

    Welcome to another great year at the USF Honors College!  We say hello this semester to the largest entering class in the history of the College, with 700 first-year students bringing lots of fresh perspectives, new ideas, and great energy to our halls.  I look forward to getting to know each of our new students over the coming weeks and months, and to hearing all about summer work/study/travel/fun experiences from our continuing students.  If you need anything to help with the transition to the new year, don't hesitate to ask me or any member of our excellent Honors College staff -- we're all here to help you!  The College offers numerous opportunities for learning, community engagement, and fun, so be sure to check this newsletter each week for information about all things Honors.  All the best to everyone for a great start to the semester!

O.N.S. - Office of National Scholarships

  • STEM Graduate Study in the United Kingdom at the University of Oxford

    The Frost Scholarship Programme funds current students of the State University System of Florida (SUSF) to study one year, full-time Master's courses in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM subjects) at the University of Oxford. The Programme is supported by the generosity of the Phillip and Patricia Frost Philanthropic Foundation. Over the next three years, the Frost Scholarship Programme will offer ten scholarships each year. You can learn more about the eligible one year master's courses here:

  • Learn a critical language abroad in 7-10 weeks!

    This workshop will discuss the Critical Language Scholarship Program (CLS). The CLS offers intensive summer language institutes overseas in fourteen critical need languages for summer 2016, with all expenses paid. The workshop will be held on October 9 at 10:00am in ALN 233.   • Interested in a career in public service?

    This workshop will discuss applications for national scholarship opportunities that focus on careers in public service such as the Truman, Udall, and Pickering, as well as other public service focused scholarships. There will be two workshops, one held on September 25 at 10:00am in ALN 233, and another on October 23 at 10:00am in ALN 233.   • Funding for undergraduate research -- Goldwater Scholarships

    You are invited to attend a workshop on the Goldwater Scholarship program, the most prestigious scholarship program in the country for undergraduate scientific research.  The Goldwater Scholarship covers undergraduate expenses up to $7,500 for 1-2 years for students planning research careers in mathematics, natural sciences, or engineering. This opportunity is for sophomores and juniors, typically with a 3.9 GPA or higher. There will be two workshops, one held on September 25 at 11:00am in ALN 233 and another one on October 23 at 2pm in ALN 252.   • Learn more about Nationally Competitive Merit Scholarships

    Attend an upcoming workshop to learn more about the Office of National Scholarships and the national scholarship opportunities that can fund your study abroad experience, do research or an internship or pursue graduate study. Workshops will be presented by year (Freshmen, Sophomore, Junior and Senior).

  • New! - St Augustine Trip

    There is still 2 male spaces available for the Honors LLC Saint Augustine trip with the Deans, Dr. Bingham and Dr. Adams! This is an amazing opportunity for students to interact with the Deans and other honors students for a weekend away to the most historical city in Florida.     Join us for our annual Tapas Night to explore the many Honors international trip opportunities for the upcoming Spring and Summer! We will have Tapas from the different countries along with information to prepare you for choosing an Honors trip.

  • New! - South Tampa Business Seeks Independent Contractors as Tutors for ACTSATAP Test Preparation

    South Tampa business providing college preparation and success services is seeking highly-skilled tutors for SAT/ACT/AP test preparation. We are seeking individuals interested in providing individual tutoring and/or facilitating small classroom instruction. Selected tutors will be considered Independent Contractors whereby various contract opportunities will be presented for consideration. As an Independent Contractor, tutor will be able to set/negotiate rates prior to his/her agreement.     Peer Mentors gain valuable skills in time management, group management, and public speaking. They represent the Honors College during Orientation and assist students with registration. They welcome new students to the college by sharing their experiences and framing our expectations for success through Fall mentoring groups. They leave a legacy of achievement, raising the bar for what it means to be an Honors College Scholar. Do you have what it takes? Are you organized? Do you plan your entire semester before classes even start? Are you friendly? Do you enjoy getting to know other students? Do you aspire to a leadership position on campus?   • USF in Northern Ireland Study Abroad Opportunity

    Interested in learning about peace building and conflict reconciliation? Then join the Global and International Affairs Department for USF in Northern Ireland program on Conflict Transformation. Over the course of three weeks students will get the opportunity to attend lectures led by leading academics hosted by Queens University and will be able to visit locations around Belfast that have been impacted by this country's history. Some of the issues that will be addressed in these lectures and site visits are types of transitional justice, understanding conflict, mediating conflict, and inclusion and exclusion in transitional societies.

  • USF HOSA Future Health Professionals Princeton Raffle

    Looking for a Princeton course? USF HOSA is raffling one! Each ticket is $20 and you can submit more than one ticket. The winner of the raffle will be announced on Friday, December 4th, 2015 (end of fall semester). The last day to submit a ticket is Thursday, December 3rd, 2015. The winner can choose a MCAT, LSAT, GMAT, or GRE Princeton course.

    Buy a ticket during one of these times:

    1) HOSA General Meetings: MSC 2709, Tuesdays, 7:30pm-8:30pm, 10/6, 11/3, 11/24.

    2) HOSA Officer Meetings: MSC 3rd Floor CSI, Tuesdays, 7:30pm-8:30pm on weeks without general meetings.

    3) HOSA Office Hours: MSC 1st floor, Einsteins. Mondays: 4pm-5pm, Tuesdays: 2pm-3pm , Wednesdays: 11am-12pm, Thursdays: 2pm-3pm.

  • USF HOSA Future Health Professionals Club

    Are you interested or may be interested in a medical career? Are you looking for an organization to develop leadership skills and character but at the same time have fun and gain recognition at regional, state, and national competitions? Do you want to make a difference nation-wide towards HOSA's national service project of raising awareness and supporting the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society? Maybe you want to explore something new? This is the club for you!

    HOSA: Future Health Professionals aims to develop skills through motivation, recognition, and awareness to increase the delivery of compassionate, quality health care to the community. The national organization provides opportunities to increase knowledge, develop leadership skills, enhance character, gain friendships, build self-confidence, increase involvement in the local and national community, and so much more. Even if you're not interested in the medical field, this organization can help you become a more well-rounded individual!

    Our meetings dates are on Tuesdays (9/15, 10/6, 11/3, 11/24) from 7:30-8:30pm at MSC 2709. There will be free food! Come check us out!
