If you are starting your thesis next fall (2012) and have no idea of a topic and/or potential mentor, I want to help. We are going to develop a one credit pre-thesis course to prepare students for their thesis experience and we need a small group to work with us to develop the course. We will need you for about 1 hour per week as well as for some time on Blackboard. You will be registered for one credit of ‘Honors Research” and will receive a $100 scholarship for participating. Those selected will not be ‘guinea pigs’; you will be a part of a design team and it is my hope that at semester’s end, we will have designed a great course and you will have an approved thesis prospectus.
The course will be held on Fridays, 9-9:50 in the Honors College
If you earned an A or B in General Chemistry courses (CHM 2045 or CHM 2046), have some time on Friday mornings, and would like to help other students in a unique leadership practice, then Peer Leading for Chemistry (CHM 4932) is an excellent upper-level course to consider for the upcoming Spring semester.
CHM 4932 will give you the tools to guide students in General Chemistry I to help them succeed. The course will raise questions both about chemistry and the teaching of chemistry. You will develop a deeper understanding of fundamental chemistry concepts and improve your oral and written communication skills. This course is also an excellent opportunity to review for big exams, such as MCAT, PCAT, DAT, GRE, etc.

Hoecker, Visoiu and Briggs Named Undergraduate Scholars
Three graduating Seniors from the Honors College were named Undergraduate Scholars for their activities leading to supervised research, community service, and global impact. The students to be congratulated are: Jacqueline Briggs (International Studies), Jay Hoecker (Environmental Science & Policy), and Ana-Maria Visoiu (Psychology).
Mentored by Dr. Sondra Fogel, Briggs created an event to raise awareness of hunger around the world. Her thesis is titled "Promoting and Sustaining Awareness of the United Nation's Millenium Development Goals and the World Food Programme's Fill the Cup Initiative on Campus."
Hoecker's research for his thesis, "A Survey of Seafood Consumption in a Coastal Jamaican Community," was conducted in Jamaica and was supervised by Dr. Connie Mizak. His work analyzes fish consumption and mercury levels among species.
Working with the Red Cross, Visoiu traveled to Romania for her thesis, "Across Borders: Red Cross Organization." Under the direction of Dr. Kevin Archer, Visoiu compared policies and programs of the Red Cross around the world.
All three Scholars were recognized at Fall Commencement on Friday, December 9th.
The Honors College is accepting applications for a *FREE* MCAT preparatory course to be offered during spring 2012. The 15-week non-credit course, facilitated by third and fourth year USF College of Medicine students, includes test strategy as well as content preparation. All materials (including practice books covering each subject and full-length practice exams) will be provided at no cost to students due to a generous donation from the Chowdhari family.
This course will be offered on Tuesday evenings from 6:00-9:00pm (location TBD). Interested students must demonstrate financial need, motivation for medical school and sufficient academic preparation for MCAT. The online permit request forms are now open for Spring 2012. To find these forms, please go to the Honors website, scroll down to Honors College Forms: Online Forms, and then the form you require.There are 2 permit request forms and a link for IDH 4910 Undergraduate Research (contract):
Permit Request form: for IDH 2010, 3100, 3350, 3400, 3600, 4000,4200 and 4930.
Thesis Permit form: A permit is needed for each semester of thesis, only one semester of thesis at a time may be permitted.
Undergraduate Research Permit: This link is found under Print Forms. Click on the link (IDH 4910) and print the Contract (once the contract is turned in, you will be registered for IDH 4910) -- beginning in Spring 12, this course is for Honors Students ONLY.
The following classes need a permit: IDH 2010, IDH 4000, IDH 4930, and ANY COURSE that you try to register for that gives you an error message. NOTE: Any Honors student who has not had IDH 2010 will usually need a permit for any Honors course -- be prepared and apply early!
Note: In SP12, the IDH 2010 classes will be for the Fall 11 incoming freshmen ONLY.
New Whitaker International Undergraduate Program for Biomedical Engineering Students Deadline March 15
The application will be made available early January 2012 for the first round of grants which will be for Fall/Academic Year 2012-2013.
With support from the Former Whitaker Foundation, IIE will provide undergraduate biomedical engineers and bioengineers funding for a semester or one academic year to pursue, in an international setting, coursework in biomedical engineering.
To be eligible for the award, an applicant must be a US citizen or have permanent residency status, be enrolled as a sophomore, junior or senior (with at least one semester remaining) and demonstrate a need for financial support to study abroad.
Study Abroad and learn about Global Health in London this summer
Dr. Linda Whiteford will be leading a study abroad course in London this summer. The course "Global Health Through the Eyes of London", will be three weeks in London, with three credit hours and will fulfill a study abroad requirement. The estimated cost of the course will be approximately $3,900.

Interested in learning about the role of water in the Grand Canyon Deadline Feb1
The Grand Canyon Honors Semester investigates the role of water in shaping the landscape, cultures and politics of the Grand Canyon regions. It is a integrated learning experience in the humanities and sciences. The program runs from August 20 to December 8, 2012.
The GCS offers a life-changing learning experience in the high mountains of northern Arizona and the deep canyon country of the Colorado Plateau. Participants need to be in good physical condition and comfortable with hiking, camping and working in remote environments at high elevations.
