5-Year College of Public Health Programs

Two master's degrees are available to Honors fast track students: a master's in public health (MPH) and a Master's of Science in Public Health (MSPH). Students may specialize in one of three areas:

Environmental and Occupational Health
Community and Family Mental Health
Health Policy and Management

The MPH is primarily considered a professional degree, with an emphasis on preparing students for a professional career in a public health specialty. The MPH students will have additional field experience and complete a special project at the end of their program. The MSPH students will not have less required field experience than the MPH and will complete a thesis at the end of their program. Both degrees prepare students to seek entrance to doctoral programs in public health or related fields.

Eligible students must have senior status and be in good standing with the Honors College. Students must also possess a minimum score of 1000 on the GRE, have two letters of recommendation from undergraduate faculty, a one page goal statement documenting a desire for a public health career, and approval by the departmental admissions committee.

All students will take Survey of Human Disease (HSC 4554) and Introduction to Public Health (HSC 4120). Prospective applicants are encouraged to take these courses prior to their senior year. They are offered every semester in various forms, including through the Internet and the Open University. These courses will not count toward the graduate degree, but may count toward the undergraduate degree as determined by the undergraduate advisor.
