Description: The second student run colloquium in our Electronic Life series will address the many questions surrounding the issue of internet "piracy" and the "illegal" downloading of music, movies, games, files, and software. A quick and informal survey suggests that a majority of USF undergraduates actively participates in this practice. But, do people take the time to think through the ethical issues and even the political issues involved in such actions? What are the ethical questions raised by the copying and distribution of such material and can "piracy" itself even become addictive behavior? Our presenters will try to frame these complicated issues and spark a lively discussion among all who attend. And there'll be food.

Description: Please join us for a cosmic bowling fundraiser for kids at Nutre Hogar and Casa Esperanza in Panama! For $10, you will get to bowl two games and rental shoes are included. Tickets will be available in the Honors College office (SVC 1088) starting the afternoon of Monday, November 9. General donations will also be accepted. The fundraiser counts as a Freshman 5 event and will take place at AMF University Lanes on 56th Street (east of campus).

Description: The Honors “Rubber Band” will have its fall concert in FAH 101 at 7PM on Wednesday, November 18. This semester, the audience will be treated to a special guest performance by Joel “Pianoman” Momberg. Under the baton of Wade Weast and his graduate students, the ensemble (no music majors allowed in the group) will play a variety of tunes and styles.

Please plan on joining us if your schedule permits; certainly if you are not picnic “attenders”, you ought to come to this event. Your attendance would show real support for both our students and College.

Description: Approximately 30 miles from Lima, the capital of Peru, in the foothills of the Andes mountains is located a home for destitute ill children directed by Dr. Anthony Lazzara, a parishioner of Christ the King Parish in Tampa, Florida. Dr. Lazzara is a pediatrician who left an academic position at Emory University in 1983 to begin an apostolate among the poor children of the Developing World. The home is called Hogar San Francisco de Asis (St. Francis of Assisi Home) and receives sick children whose parents cannot afford to buy them required medicines or treatments to restore them to health. The children live in the home and receive all necessary medications, food, and other needs without charge. Once they are well, the children return to their families. The most frequent illnesses treated are chronic diarrhea, malnutrition, tuberculosis and chronic respiratory diseases. There is a full complement of nursing staff to care for the children 24 hours a day as well as cooks, laundresses, and other ancillary personnel.

Welcome to the Hogar San Francisco de Asis. This Hogar was founded by Dr. Anthony (Tony) Lazzara to care for children who are both destitute and experiencing serious health problems in Peru. At this time the ages of the children range from newborn to young adults in their mid 20´s. The types of medical illness vary and include but are not limited to malnutrition, TB, cleft lip and palate, various types of cancer. The length of stay for each child varies: they stay until they are well enough to return to their families. During their stay at the Hogar this is their home and everyone in the home is considered their family.

Anybody interested in medicine ought to be here for this – Dr. Elster demonstrates how high in the profession an Honors College graduate can go!
