Silverman Celebrates Silver

Dean Stuart Silverman has just completed 25 years at the helm of USF Honors. Silverman came to USF in 1970 as a faculty member in the department of Psychological Foundations in the College of Education. In 1987 he became the second Director of the Honors Program. March 2002 was a major milestone as the Program achieved Honors College status by action of the University Board of Trustees. Silverman became Interim Dean at that time and in December, 2002 he was named founding Dean of the College.

Program growth over 25 years has been significant. Silverman took over a program with 60 students and now oversees a college of more than 1600 students. The college boasts an orchestra, jazz ensemble, a cappella singing group, 300+ residential living-learning community and, this year, 50 national scholarship winners. When asked to comment on the college's success, Silverman gave credit to 25 years of bright, high achieving motivated students, a college staff dedicated to student success, a talented, creative and caring teaching faculty, and several thousand graduates who have gone on to be remarkably successful, making a difference along the way.
